Vermeer's parents moved house when he
was nine years old. This large house, the Mechelen Inn on the
Markt, stand at the corner of the Oude Manhuissteeg.
The Inn had large windows facing onto the Markt and no less than six fireplaces. This made the Mechelen House one of the most imposing buildings on the Markt.
The site where mechelen house stood
Its location, with the town hall on one side and the Nieuwe Kerk on the other side was very favorable and an ideal meeting place for discussions and exchanging bits of news.
It was here that Vermeer's artistic development really began. Though the Mechelen House was pulled down in 1885, we can now see an imaginary room of Vermeer at Huis L.V.Meerten, on Oude Delft 199.
