(11)Oudekerk

The Old church is the oldest church in Delft. The church was first dedicated to St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of the fonder of the church, Bartholomeus van der Made.

Named after St. Hippolytus in 1396, a church fouder and a martyr, the building was ordained for protestant worship from 1573 onwards.

The church was renovated and enlarged again and again over the years,of which the leaning tower is one of the oldest parts.

It began to subside during its construction, from 1325. The builders kept their heads and corrected the subsidence by carrying on building in the perpendicular. The result was that the tower developed a kink.

Graves of celebrated people here include the statesman Antonie Heinsius and the naval heroes Piet Hein and Maarten Harpertszn. Tromp. Although the church was used for protestant worship, catholics could also be buried , as Vermeer was buried here.
